And as soon as you're not a human be-ing, you're a human do-ing. - Brad Goodman

I've spent the last 6 months unemployed.
By choice.

This is unheard of for me.
I finished year 12 in 1989 and during those school years I worked at the local service station/corner store/produce store/takeaway shop on weekends while at school.
I finished school and started work two weeks later at a video store in Toowoomba.
I have never NOT worked.

In July I had a total mental breakdown.
Yes. I was not in a very good place at all.  Even doing the most menial tasks would stress me out.
Luckily for me I have an incredibly supportive husband and a fantastic group of friends and family who all rallied around me.

"What in the name of shit have you been doing for the last 6 months?" I hear you wail.

For the first 2 months I applied for heaps of jobs with no response. I was interviewed 3 times but didn't get the jobs.  This stress of looking for work and the slow pulverizing of any self confidence I may have had buried quickly turned my nerves to over load.  It added to my negative thoughts that "there must be something wrong with me. I'm defective. I'm useless".
I started to sleep a lot and eat.... a lot.....

On one particular day I was a mess. I was shaking and crying and thinking some very dark thoughts.
I rang my doctor but he was away so I took an appointment with the temp doctor.
I will call him Dr Nick.

I went in. I was bawling and trembling and I told Dr Nick that I didn't think I wanted to live anymore. I told him that I needed help.  He sat there looking at me sternly with his arms crossed.
Blowing my nose and sniffing I told that I really needed to apply to a temporary disability pension.
I explained that I just needed 3 months to get my head in order.
Still with arms crossed Dr Nick shakes his head. "No. No you don't qualify for that".
I burst into tears and stammered "Why?"
"Because your breakdown is related to your job experiences not directly related to your Bipolar".
I told him that I cannot deal with the stress of looking for another job and I need to be referred to a good psychiatrist.
"Would you say you are anxious?" He interrupted.
I looked at him incredulously and sobbed "Ummmm yes???!!".
He prints out a script and gives it to me and says "Just take these. There's a good psychologist upstairs just go see her".
I was just too drained and exhausted to retaliate so I muttered "..mmm.kay" and walked out.
I went to the chemist and put in the script.
The chemist came out to me and asked if I had used this medicine before.
I sighed that I didn't even know what it was.
"It's Diazepam. Valium. Sleeping Tablets." the chemist answered.

So let me get this straight. I went to a doctor and told him I was suicidal and his solution?
Give me a box of 50 sleeping tablets.
The people in the chemist must have thought I was mental. Here's this woman in an old stained t-shirt and shorts, hair everywhere, bright red puffy eyes and nose, dark circles under my eyes and I just start laughing in the shop. I mean cackling like a total loon. It was just so ridiculous.

I went home and had a big talk to hubby. aka My Big Hairy Angel.
We made calls to the bank and our My Budget people it was determined that we could afford for me to take some time off. Thank fuck for good budgeting. Yes it would be tight and we would go backwards a bit with our savings but ....................
========================================================

The last 4 months I admit I have spent a LOT of time sleeping.
I gave myself permission for the first time ever......
TO DO NOTHING.

HOWEVER

The anxiety ridden Vicki in my brain screamed at me that I was "wasting time" and I should be using this time to "declutter the whole house/paint the eaves/paint the walls/build a garden/sew 500 dresses" and on and on and on.  You see, I am a "project" person.
I find it very hard to sit still and do nothing.
TIME TIME TIME TIME YOU ARE WASTING TIME WASTING TIME.
This goes around around in my head.
I had written myself crazy long lists of all the things I felt that I had to do and then I would get so upset with myself if I couldn't do it.

So each day I set myself ONE task to do.
Monday - Wash socks and jocks.
Tuesday - Vaccum
Wednesday - Clean Bathroom
etc etc etc
I told myself I only needed to do that ONE thing.
It was hard.
I felt like I was letting Mick down if I didn't have the whole house scrubbed each day.
After all..... I'm not working so it's not fair I sit around and watch Netflix all day is it?!!
I read a couple of great self help books, I binge watched TV shows, I sewed, I listened to podcasts, I napped, and I told myself "it's ok".

I also did a 14 week Certificate IV in Ageing Support with the view to becoming a Personal Support Worker/AIN.  This was the best thing ever.   I absolutely LOVED going to class 2 days a week. I LOVED learning new things and doing assignments.  I LOVED meeting the incredible woman who did the course with me.  My teacher Dianna was just so wonderful.
This class was so incredibly cathodic for me.
I start my 3 weeks of full-time on the job experience on Monday.
I'm nervous/anxious/scared but also excited.
I've had to remind myself that if I do the 3 weeks and decide that this kind of work isn't for me ...
It's okay. It's fine. I gave it a crack and I met some fab funny people.

Why Aged Care?

I realised that what makes me happy is making others happy.
Not in a martyrdom or self sacrificing way.
I put on my Fancy Dress Disco each year. Yes to raise money for beyondblue but because I just love to help bring a night of joy and happiness to people.
I organise luncheons to get frocked up and eat cake because I love to bring people together and make them smile.
I makes me feel good. I makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

So I figure, if I can work with people who are lonely, frail and unable to care for themselves then maybe I can bring a bit of light into their lives and make them feel good and there-fore make myself feel good too.

I realise it's not going to be all lavender sachets, Tabu perfume and Avon powder.
There will be poo, heart break and sadness too.
I'm not going in with rose coloured Ray-bans.

I expect to be exhausted.
I've worked for the last 20 years as a desk jockey and am now going to be doing a very physical job.
I've never had to shower anyone, toilet anyone, change a colostomy bag or feed someone before.

I have a good feeling about it though.
It feels good to be going to a CARE industry.

2018 is going to be a great year.
I feel it in me gutz.

Fancy Dress Disco supporting beyondblue 2017

WELL ROLL ME IN HUNDREDS & THOUSANDS
AND CALL ME SHIRLEY....

Geez September rolls around bloody quick.

And September means.............

THE ANNUAL FANCY DRESS DISCO supporting beyondblue
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is my 4th Fancy Dress Disco for beyondblue and I just have to say that each year it just gets better and better.

As some of you know I have The Bipolar and so awareness and raising money for an organisation that does so much to help people with mental illness, depression and anxiety gets me right in the feels.

It also helps that I frickin' LURVE getting dressed up in crazy wacky outfits and dancing like a man wrestling a snake in a phone box to all my favourite retro tunes.
Add to this my obsession with all things sewing and well,
it is my FUNNEST night of the year.

This year Club Greenslopes once again stepped up to provide the host venue.
Will, Lance and all the staff are just so lovely and the room itself ticks all the boxes for what the disco needs (huge arse dancefloor, funky flashing lights, fairy lights and a stage for me flaunt my shit on and show off on)

So many utterly BRILLIANT people/businesses donated heaps of great goods to be raffled off.  From incredible art to skin and hair care products to pin up glam goods to life coaching session....
Sure, it might give me the shits that I couldn't win the $1000 Flight Centre voucher or the $100 Lush gift boxes but I'm just happy that other people won them
*smiles very very very wide*. (kidding)

As usual, my "commiddy" of rapscallions, misfits and oddballs were my saving grace as I had bitten my fingernails past the quick and was contemplating moving on to my toe nails. Honestly, if it weren't for them I would be balled up in a corner somewhere whimpering " I can't do it. No one will come. What if? What if What if??.  They grab me by the shoulders, slap my face, shake me and then hug me. They also take care of the raffles and the door on the night & help blow up all the balloons (ok so they probably inhale more helium than what goes into the balloons) AND help me clean up at the end of the night. They are fucking awesome.

This year I chose to go as Effie Trinkett from movie The Hunger Games.  I'm not a big HG fan BUT I am a big fan of the costumes of Effie in the movie and so in true Vicki style I chose the most stressful hardest outfit to make.  The Reaping outfit.   I used a utterly STUNNING *cough* 1980's bridal dress patttern.  The top is a fushia cotton sateen & the skirt is corderoy. In the movie she wears silly black high heels. I have feet flatter than Donald Duck and can't wear a heel higher than about 2mm so I found the PERFECT colour match in a pair of awesome granny slippers from Kmart. 5 BUCKS. THANK YOU.  Then I had to buy the wig & make the huge arse flower. (Huge arse hair flower was from the Bargain Shop for $5 and spray painted).
Besides the fact that I am about 2 metres shorter and wider than Elizabeth Banks who plays Effie I think I pulled the look off pretty good.

Each year the effort and creativity that people put into their costumes just blows me away.  I feel truly grateful that they embrace the fun of the night.  There are just TOO many photos for me to put on here but these are some of my favourite costumes of the night.

On the Monday after the event I felt that I could finally put my full weight on my legs after dancing, bopping around, running to & fro and doing little jigs for about 8 hours straight -  to heave my arse out of bed to count the money .

I was so happy to announce that the night raised a total of
$3625 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED.
Those of you who came along, those who donated money, those who donated prizes and those of you who shared it on social media to help make it such a successful fun happy night.

Fancy Dress Disco supporting beyondblue 2015

Every year I say to my poor husband....

"This year I am going to take it easy. I'm going to be nice & quiet and do bugger all. Lots of peaceful walks on the beach, tranquil sewing, watch some DVDs and meditate. No running around like a mad chook. No putting myself under pressure. No stress. "

Then the mushy grey stuff between my ears gets to thinking.
Gets to planning
Gets to scheming.
I don't know what it is but it's like a compulsion.
Itchy fingers.
I can't help myself. I just LOVE setting up fun events for people.
What a weirdo.

And so it happens...

"Darl. I've decided to put on ANOTHER event! This time a fundraiser for beyondblue!!
A FANCY DRESS DISCO !!!!!"

I am proud to say that we got (almost exactly) 100 people through the door.
Every single one of those 100 people looked absolutely fantastic!!! The effort that everybody put into their outfits was truly exceptional and hilarious.

Because I decided against having a theme, people were free to get creative and so ....
we had Pirates galore, Princesses, Vikings, not one but THREE Coop Devils, Doc & Marty McFly, hippies, Mary Poppins & Bert, Vikings, Cave Men/Women , Rocky, Michael Jackson, A big Banana,  Brittany Spears and Scooby Doo with Shaggy just to name a few!!!
And a bunch of FURRIES who totally stole the show with their incredible outfits.
(How the hell they can dance all night in those heavy furry outfits is beyond me)

THE WONDERFUL FURRIES

I went as a kewpie doll.  When I put it together it was a great idea but I must admit on the night I was NOT comfortable at all and regretted my choice.  I am not used to wearing something so revealing & I was paranoid my bazoongas were going to come flying out!

DJ Nephthys & MC Kiranov had the dance floor packed all night with everything from disco to eighties to nightclub nineties to bitchin air guitar rock to ska to weird one hit wonders.
It was awesome!  I think one of the highlights for me was seeing everybody just going OFF all together and in the middle this big banana dancing around next to Scooby Doo!
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

DJ NEPHTHYS & MC KIRANOV

It was almost impossible to pick a best costume & best group costume & the staff at the bowls club had a really hard time deciding.  Right up to the very end they were debating out the back on who should win !

The trophy for best costume went to Frankenfurter from Rocky Horror. Not only did Matt look fabulous in his sexy skimpy attire (with high-heels made from thongs & gaffer tape) but he also put on an award winning lip-sync performance of "Sweet Transvestite" for the adoring crowd.

The trophy for best group costume went to the Smurf-a-licious Tricia & Dan who have always been two of my biggest supporters. Smurfastic !!!! I love you guys.

The fantastic tiki kitsch trophies were designed & created by the super gorgeous Danielle from Black Lagoon Designs.

After the presentation of the trophies it was time for the drawing of the raffles.
We had 4 MASSIVE packs filled with all sorts of fantastic goods & vouchers donated by a stack of wonderful businesses & people.

The other highlight of the night was INSTATHAT.
Holy moly SO COOOOOL.

Basically, you took a photo on your smart phone thingy & uploaded it to Instagram with the hash tag #FDCDBB it would print out on this funky printer watchamacallit and you got to keep a copy of the photo .... FOR FREE!
It was the BEST thing like totally ever.  I can't recommend it highly enough.
Thank you again to Nicky from Instathat for manning the photo station and keeping control of the crazy  masses!!

What's a Pirate's favourite letter?  Rrrrrrrrr ?
NO It's the C

The whole night raised a total of $2000 for beyondblue.
HOW AWESOME IS THAT? !!!

I can proudly say that everybody had a brilliant fun night of crazy dancing, eating yummo food and cacking themselves laughing all while raising money AND awareness for a brilliant organisation.
For me, the purpose of the night is not so much around the money.  It is more about creating a night of fun & joy for people.  Life can get overwhelming and stressful so sometimes it is great to be able to dress up in a crazy outfit and literally dance like no one's watching to great music & forget your troubles and issues even if it is just for just a few hours.
If I made just one person laugh & smile then I am stoked.
====================================
As everybody was leaving they were grabbing me & hugging me and squealing in excitement
"NEXT YEAR I will bring all my friends!!! I'm already thinking of my next costume!!!"

I guess that means that there will be a 2016 Fancy Dress Disco.

STAY TUNED !!!!!

WELCOME TO THE NEW LOOK RAYON DREAMS !

So I figured the ole blog needed a bit of a spruce up.
To be taken outside and given a good shake out to get rid of all the dead skin cells and hair.

I've been having a hard time with my blog.
I love it but I also hate it.
I really beat myself up about it.
I really should write SOMETHING.
I've got nothing to write about.
You're a boring dickhead Vicki.
Shut up Vicki.
Nobody is interested.
Shut up Vicki you should just be writing for yourself anyway.
Why do I blog & why do I get so upset with myself about it when I feel like I can't?

Why do I care so much ?

I realised this morning that this problem seems to run over into over areas of my life.

I really do seem care too much about what other people think of me.

What if people think I'm an idiot?
What if people look at me and think I'm weird or fucked in the head?
(note: I actually am weird and fucked in the head)
What if I don't FIT IN?
What if people judge me and hate me?
What if I'm not a good person?

I really didn't think that I thought this way.
But I realise that I do.

Sometimes it is hard being part of a 'sub-culture'. The vintage "scene" is very much about appearances and this can (if you let it) put a bit of pressure on a girl sometimes.
To fit in.

I know that I AM a vintage loving gal. That is WHO I AM. It's not a phase.
I couldn't even IMAGINE dressing in 'modern' fashion or doing my hair & make up in anything other than a some-what vintage style yet.....

I put so much pressure on myself to present myself in a certain way and sometimes it's .... well.... tiring and stressful.

I didn't think I was the type who looked at others and feel envious or jealous .....  but I am.

I wish I could write like them. I wish I looked like them.  I wish I had their clothing. blah blah.

Yesterday I was in Spotlight & I saw some amazing brightly coloured bird print fabric and my tummy did it's flip flop of excitement when it sees something that it falls in love with.
I picked it up & swooned over it.
Then my internal negative Vicki voice says "yeah but it's not very VINTAGEY is it? You'll just look all bright and crazy in that. You should get something more AUTHENTIC looking not that silly thing".

I stood there for a bit and suddenly thought "You know what Vicki. Shut the fuck up. I fucking LOVE bright weird novelty print things and if I want to sew a THOUSAND of the same simple boring blouse in crazy coloured kooky prints and wear them even though they aren't remotely vintagey than I fucking will!"

Negative Vicki was stunned and quickly backed away into the naughty corner of my brain muttering obscenities under her breath.

So, I have decided to embrace this new sometimes vintage sometimes weird sometimes daggy Vicki.

If I want to write about doing the washing up then I will.
If I want to blog about sewing I will.
If I don't feel like blogging for a month then I won't and I won't beat myself up over it.
If I want to sew nothing but blouses then I will.
If I want to take a shit ton of selfies I will & not care what anyone thinks.

I feel like embracing my new style and it will be silly and colourful and a bit mental.
I will take inspiration from the ladies of "Advanced Style". (a wonderful documentary that you MUST see if you haven't).

I know I am my own worst enemy.

But I'm getting better. So my new mantra is "FUCK IT AND DO IT ANYWAY"
